The Second Wave: Indian D2C Niches with Demand but No Brand at Scale Yet
The first wave of Indian D2C created category leaders in beauty, supplements, and food. The second wave is forming now in niches where consumer demand is measurable but no brand has yet built the scale, distribution, or community that defines a category winner. These are the niches where the OppScore is high and the window is open.
What defines a second-wave niche
A second-wave niche has three characteristics: (1) measurable consumer demand — active Reddit communities, Google Trends momentum above baseline, or search volume showing month-on-month growth; (2) thin organised supply — fewer than 5 brands in the niche, no player with significant community following or consistent ad presence; and (3) structural tailwind — a demographic, behavioural, or regulatory shift making the demand durable rather than episodic.
This is different from a white space that has no brands because there's no demand. The second-wave niches impuls8 identifies have demand signals that predate the brands — the consumer need exists, the product category is being discussed, and buyers are actively searching. The brand just hasn't been built yet.

Mushroom-based supplements: the clearest case
Functional mushrooms — Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps — have moved from niche wellness to mainstream consumer awareness in India over the past 18 months. Reddit discussions in r/IndiaFitness and r/IndianSkincareAddicts reference specific mushroom ingredients regularly. Google Trends shows consistent upward movement. Yet the Indian D2C brand field has 2–3 early entrants and no company that has built the brand equity, community, and distribution that this demand warrants.
OppScore of 4.8 makes it the highest-scoring niche in the health & wellness category by our measure. The sourcing infrastructure exists (most raw materials come from China and are available at reasonable MOQ). The regulatory path is clear under FSSAI. This is a well-defined opportunity with a visible window — and the window won't stay open indefinitely as more Indian founders discover it.
Senior nutrition: India's overlooked consumer
India's 60+ population is approaching 140 million people. Consumer expenditure in this cohort is rising as retirement savings grow and healthcare awareness increases. Yet Indian D2C has produced zero brands specifically targeting the senior nutrition and wellness need — no branded calcium + D3 + collagen stack aimed at the Indian senior consumer, no bone health positioning, no age-related gut health brand.
The closest analogues are global brands (Ensure, Horlicks) that are not D2C, not community-led, and not targeted at the specific micro-needs this cohort has. The gap is genuine and measurable. OppScore of 4.5 reflects a category where demand exists but supply is entirely undifferentiated.
PCOS & hormonal wellness: strong demand, fragmented supply
PCOS affects an estimated 10–20% of Indian women of reproductive age — a large, self-aware consumer base that is actively looking for solutions. Reddit communities dedicated to PCOS have tens of thousands of members. Google Trends for PCOS-related supplements has grown consistently for three years. Yet the brand field remains fragmented: 3–4 early-stage brands, no company with a dominant position, consistent ad presence, or national distribution.
This niche has the profile of a first-wave category that somehow didn't produce a winner in the first wave. That delay is an opportunity: the demand has been validated and is growing, the consumer language is established, and the bar for a well-positioned brand to gain community leadership is lower than in a more mature niche.
What the second wave means for investors
Earlier entry, clearer signal
The second wave offers earlier entry than first-wave categories at comparable or better demand signals. The category creation work has been done by consumer behaviour — investors don't need to bet on a new behaviour forming, only on a brand capturing an existing one.
Lower competition, faster brand-building window
In most second-wave niches, there is no dominant brand to displace. The brand-building window — owning the community, owning the search results, owning the content around the niche — is open. That window closes quickly once a well-funded entrant appears.
OppScore as a pre-diligence filter
impuls8's OppScore combines brand density, search momentum, community signals, and ad presence into a single 0–5 metric per niche. Niches scoring above 4.0 with fewer than 5 brands are where the second wave is most visible. The filter returns roughly 80 niches today.
