Where Indian D2C Is Under-Invested in 2026

India's D2C investment narrative clusters around the same five categories — beauty, health, food, fashion, and fitness. But data from 3,500+ brands across 400+ niches tells a different story: several categories have demonstrated consumer demand, thin brand density, and no institutional capital behind them yet.

The investment clustering problem

Indian D2C capital is concentrated. Beauty & skincare, health & wellness, food & beverage, and fashion together account for the bulk of disclosed seed and Series A rounds in the past five years. This isn't irrational — these are large categories with proven consumer demand and measurable unit economics. But concentration creates a secondary effect: categories outside the cluster are systematically underfunded even when consumer demand is evident.

impuls8 tracks 3,500+ Indian D2C brands weekly. Across 400+ micro-niches, we measure brand density (number of brands per niche), search momentum (Google Trends delta), community demand (Reddit signals), and ad presence (Meta library). This combination reveals where consumers are actively looking for products that brands haven't yet built at scale.

Seven categories the data flags as under-invested

The following categories have sub-50-brand density, growing search momentum, and limited Series A+ activity. Each has structural reasons for being underfunded — but those reasons are largely legacy assumptions, not current market realities.

Auto accessories: the overlooked consumer play

India adds millions of new car owners every year. The accessories market — seat covers, dash cameras, fragrance, organisers, safety kits — is fragmented across unbranded local suppliers and a handful of Amazon-native brands. Brand awareness is near zero. No D2C brand has built recognisable equity here. At ~20 brands tracked, this is one of the thinnest categories relative to TAM.

The investment barrier has historically been sourcing complexity and low perceived margin. But comparable categories in Korea and China show that a design-led, safety-first brand can command 40–60% gross margins in car accessories. The cultural tailwind — cars as identity, not just transport — is catching up in India's urban tier-1 markets.

Sexual wellness: the fastest structural shift

Of all under-invested categories, sexual wellness has the fastest-moving cultural context. Three years ago, paid acquisition for these products was nearly impossible on Meta and Google. Today, several brands run active campaigns. Consumer language has changed — Reddit communities discuss products openly, and search intent is measurable and growing.

With ~20 brands tracked and OppScore of 4.2, this is a category where a well-positioned, clinically-backed brand can own the narrative before it gets crowded. The window is open; it won't stay that way.

Sustainable & eco: premiumisation without a category leader

The sustainable goods segment (~30 brands) has the highest OppScore in our under-invested list. Consumer willingness to pay a premium for eco-certified, natural-ingredient products is well-established — but the market has fragmented into dozens of tiny single-SKU brands. No company has built a portfolio brand with distribution scale and recurring revenue.

This is a category where a platform play — think multiple eco-friendly product lines under one brand identity — could replicate what The Honest Company or Grove Collaborative did in the US. The ingredients are there: growing consumer awareness, premium pricing tolerance, and almost no incumbent with network effects.

What the data says about timing

Category creation is expensive; category acceleration is not

The brands in these niches have already done the hardest work — proving that consumers will pay for the product. A well-funded entrant doesn't need to create demand; it needs to capture it at scale.

Quick commerce changes the denominator

Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have reduced the distribution barrier significantly for categories like auto accessories, pet care and personal care. A brand that would have needed years to build offline distribution can now reach 50 cities in months.

The bootstrapped ceiling is real

Most current players in these categories are bootstrapped. That's a signal of capital efficiency — but also a ceiling on growth velocity. A funded entrant with a coherent brand and performance marketing can displace bootstrapped incumbents faster than in a category with Series A+ competition.
