Private Label Food Manufacturing in India: Who Makes What for Whom

Most Indian D2C food brands don't own their manufacturing. They use contract manufacturers — licensed FSSAI facilities that produce to your recipe, package in your branding, and ship to your warehouse. Here's how the co-manufacturing ecosystem works, by category.

Why Indian food brands manufacture locally

Unlike electronics or furniture where China has clear manufacturing advantages, food manufacturing in India is preferable for most D2C brands. FSSAI registration is significantly simpler with a domestic co-manufacturer, import duties on processed food are high (30–100%), and freshness / cold chain management is far easier with a domestic supply chain.

The exception is raw ingredients (exotic botanicals, specific nutraceutical compounds) where India does import from China, SE Asia, and Europe — but the finished product is almost always manufactured in India.

FSSAI licensing — what you need to know

Basic registration vs State licence vs Central licence

Turnover under ₹12L: basic registration. ₹12L–20 Cr: State licence. Above ₹20 Cr or multi-state distribution: Central licence. Your co-manufacturer handles their own — you need a separate FSSAI licence as the brand/importer.

Product approval for novel ingredients

Certain ingredients (some adaptogens, high-dose vitamins, novel fibres) require FSSAI product approval before commercialisation. This can add 3–6 months to your launch timeline. Check before finalising your formula.

Labelling requirements

Mandatory: nutritional information per 100g/ml, allergen declarations, vegetarian/non-vegetarian mark, FSSAI licence number of manufacturer and marketer, best before date, net weight, country of origin for imported ingredients.
